  • Crisafulli Government has delivered four new appliances for local fire brigades worth $1.185 million.
  • Local volunteer firefighters were also celebrated, with the presentation of 32 medals and awards.
  • The event was one of four official handovers across south-east Queensland over the weekend. A total 14 brigades officially received the keys to 15 new appliances, worth a combined $4.75 million.

The Crisafulli Government has delivered a boost to emergency response across Logan and Scenic Rim communities with the delivery of six new rural fire trucks.

The six rural fire brigades from Mount Alford to Aratula have been handed the keys to five medium-attack vehicles and one light-attack vehicle.

After a decade of decline under Labor, our Rural Fire Volunteers struggled to attain access to the appliances they needed to fight fire and protect their safety.

The Crisafulli Government has delivered an increase to Rural Fire Appliances by over 100 per cent.

The new appliances are operational and ready to respond to incidents and conduct mitigation activities locally and more broadly across the Logan and Somerset region.

Volunteer firefighters were formally recognised during the ceremony, with a range of service and operational medals presented to 32 local recipients in acknowledgement of their dedication and commitment.

The awards also recognise many decades of service to local brigades as well as exemplary service during specific disasters.

Awards handed out during the ceremony included the Queensland Fire Medal, Chief Officer’s Commendation, the National Emergency Medal for the 2019-2020 bushfire season, QFES Medal 2nd and 3rd clasps and Diligent and Ethical Service Medal 1st, 2nd and 3rd clasps.

Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leahy said the Crisafulli Government was committed to backing Queensland’s volunteer firefighters.

“This investment highlights our dedication to providing Rural Fire Service Queensland volunteers with the equipment they need to carry out their critical work,” Minister Leahy said.

“These volunteers play an important role year-round in serving their communities and we are committed to supporting and recognising them in that role.”

Local volunteer firefighters were also celebrated, with the presentation of 32 medals and awards.

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said this event was a testament to our volunteer firefighters and their importance to our community.

“During times of severe weather and emergency, it is local volunteers who consistently step forward to support their neighbours and protect their communities,” Mr McDonald said.

“Being able to recognise that service and support their efforts through formal acknowledgement and improved equipment is an important part of backing those who give so much.”

Member for Scenic Rim Jon Krause said the handover of new fire appliances was a practical investment in local capability.

“These new appliances will significantly strengthen local response capacity and ensure our volunteer firefighters have reliable, modern equipment when they are called on to respond,” Mr Krause said.

“Investments like this make a real difference on the ground, improving safety for firefighters and enhancing protection for the communities they serve.”

RFSQ South Eastern Region Deputy Chief Officer John Welke said the new appliances were an important step in allowing brigades to plan for their future.

“These new appliances will ensure they can continue to provide vital support to their communities in coming years,” he said.

“Brigades in this region are very active and well coordinated when responding to large-scale, or prolonged events.

“In October, each of these brigades took on a significant workload fighting grassfires and providing assisting to other brigades across weeks of challenging conditions.”
