The Crisafulli Government is delivering on its $20 million election commitment to upgrade the Brisbane Valley Highway, improving safety and access for communities in the electorates of Lockyer and Nanango.
This first step in a broader plan to restore safety and reliability to the region’s roads will begin later this month, and will include strengthening a five kilometre section of the highway south of Toogoolawah near Ottaba.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said resurfacing and improved drainage on the Brisbane Valley Highway will deliver a smoother, safer and more resilient link for Somerset, connecting communities and supporting local industries.
“The former Labor Government promised to deliver this critical road upgrade, before they abandoned the Somerset region,” Minister Mickelberg said.
“The Crisafulli Government is finally giving this major regional connector the attention it deserves, to keep the local community moving.
“During Labor’s decade of decline, motorists and freight operators have been forced to endure dangerous conditions on one of Somerset’s most critical transport corridors.
“These long overdue upgrades will deliver a smoother, more durable road surface, reduce ongoing maintenance and improve safety for all road users.”
Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said the $20 million investment is about delivering safer roads that protect lives and keep the region moving.
“Labor ignored the Brisbane Valley Highway for years, leaving families and freight operators to navigate crumbling roads,” Ms Frecklington said.
“In delivering on our election promise, the Crisafulli Government is restoring confidence in regional infrastructure, ensuring Queenslanders can travel safely and efficiently.”
Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said the highway is the lifeblood of Somerset communities and industries.
“Labor promised this critical infrastructure and then walked away, leaving regional Queenslanders behind, costing locals time, money and their safety on the Brisbane Valley Highway,” Mr McDonald said.
“Now, the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job, creating strong roads for strong regions, and ensuring our communities finally get the safe, reliable roads they deserve.”
